Bowel screening program may be extended

The federal government is considering extending Australia’s bowel cancer screening program but a decision won’t be made until next year, Health Minister Nicola Roxon says.
With funding for the current program due to run out in June 2011, only people who turn one of the target ages before the end of this year will be invited to be screened, with no guarantee the program will renewed.
People are currently screened when they turn 50, 55 and 65, however, Ms Roxon has said the government is considering rolling out more comprehensive screening for everyone aged over 50.
