Men with prostate cancer should have their bone mineral density measured before starting androgen deprivation therapy, according to new guidelines from the Endocrine Society of Australia, the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society, and the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand.
Published in the Medical Journal of Australia (March), the guidelines recommended general measures to prevent bone loss in men who were candidates for ADT, such as resistance exercise, as well as ensuring sufficient calcium and vitamin D intake.
Men with a history of fracture also needed to be started on a bisphosphonate, the experts said, but they stopped short of recommending the approach for men with no fracture history.
