Gene test identifies indolent prostate cancers

Australian urologists have helped develop a simple gene test that could change the management of early prostate cancers by discriminating between indolent and more aggressive cancers.
Researchers at the Garvan Institute at Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital say the new test, which measures three genes, is superior to the current nomogram in predicting recurrence of prostate cancer and identifies men at high risk of recurrence of disease who are likely to benefit from adjuvant therapy such as hormone, radiation and systemic treatments.
In a study in the Journal of Urology they describe how they used the test for the genes known as DPT, MYH11 and SSBP1 on prostate tissue in almost 300 patients who had undergone prostatectomy.
