Screening for prostate cancer with PSA tests is not justified but a single PSA test at the age of 60 could be used to predicts a man’s lifetime risk prostate cancer, two new studies suggest.
A case control study of 1167 Swedish men who had a PSA test at the age of 60 found that 90% of prostate cancer deaths occurred in men with the highest PSA levels at that age
In contrast, men with average or low PSA levels at 60 had negligible rates of prostate cancer or death by age 85, the study in the BMJ today shows. The study authors say their results suggest that at least half of men aged 60 and older might be exempted...
