Cancer culprits

Eight HPV types are responsible for more than 90% of all cervical cancer cases worldwide, research suggests.
The most common HPV types identified in samples from 10,575 cases of invasive cervical cancer diagnosed over the last 60 years were 16, 18, 45, 33, 31, 52, 58 and 35, in descending order.
Noting that current vaccines prevented infection by HPV types 16 and 18, and offered cross protection against 31 and 45, the authors said their findings reinforced the rationale for prevention of cervical cancer through existing vaccines.
