Carboplatin-paclitaxel remains best standard of care

Adding topotecan to carboplatin plus paclitaxel does not improve progression-free survival in patients with ovarian cancer and leads to greater toxicity, a study finds.
The Phase III study found that the use of four cycles of cisplatin-topotecan followed by four cycles of carboplatin —paclitaxel did not provide improved progression free survival or quality of life or response rates compared to eight cycles of standard carboplatin-paclitaxel.
The study randomised 800 women with newly-diagnosed stage IIB or more advanced ovarian cancer to one of two groups: the first arm received cisplatin and topotecan, followed by carboplatin and paclitaxel; the second arm received only carboplatin and paclitaxel.
After a median follow-up of 43 months, 650 patients had disease progression and 406 had died,...
