The thrombopoietin receptor agonist romiplostim (Nplate) is listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme from today for the initial and continuing treatment of adult patients with chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).
 
According to manufacturer, Amgen, a 5-year open-label extension study found the drug safely and effectively maintained platelet counts in a significant majority of patients with chronic idiopathic ITP.
