Giving chemotherapy at the same time as radiotherapy to patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer who have not had surgery doubles their event free survival (EFS), results from the UKHAN1 trial show.
Published in the Lancet Oncology, the trial found that patients who did not have surgery and but had radiotherapy and two courses of non-platinum chemotherapy extended their EFS by 1.2 years compared to those who had radiotherapy alone (median EFS 2.2 vs 1.0 years, p=0.004).
The UK Head and Neck (UKHAN) cancer group examined the effect of giving chemotherapy at the same time as or after radiotherapy with or without surgery on the 10-year outcomes of nearly 1,000 patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer.
