Oesophageal cancer on the increase

The incidence of oesophageal adenocarcinoma is increasing and more support to target risk factors such as smoking and diet is needed to improve survival, Australian researchers conclude.
Drawing on data from the NSW Central Cancer Registry, Sydney researchers found that in line with the rest of Australia and the world, the overall incidence of oesophageal adenocarcinoma (AC) increased by 4% every year for the past 20 years.
Men were four times more likely to be diagnosed with AC diagnosis and the cancer was more common in those with a higher socioeconomic status and those living in an inner or outer regional area compared with a major city.
