Gefitinib improves progression-free survival (PFS) compared to carboplatin-paclitaxel when used first-line in patients with metastatic EGFR-mutated non-small-cell lung cancer, a new study has concluded.
A total of 230 patients were randomly assigned to one of the two treatments. The study was stopped prematurely, after a planned interim analysis of the first 200 participants showed that the hazard ratio for death or disease progression in the gefitinib group was 0.36.
Gefitinib-treated patients had a significantly longer PFS (10.8 vs 5.4 months) as well as a higher response rate (74% vs 31%). Median overall survival was 30.5 months and 23.6 months in the gefitinib and chemotherapy groups, respectively.
Toxicity associated with gefitinib was considered to be acceptable and less that that caused...
