Gene test misses HER2 positives

The Oncotype DX test misses 72% of HER2 positive cases and might, as a result, be less reliable than previously thought for assessing risk of recurrence, the first independent study to evaluate the HER2 component of the test concludes.
The commercial prognostic test has been heavily promoted in the US and is available to Australian patients through Healthscope Pathology for $4000.
But on the back of worrying new findings published in this week’s Journal of Clinical Oncology, researchers have said it is “imperative” that the company examine its HER2 results to make sure clinical decisions are not being made on the basis of that aspect of the test.
