Radiotherapy halves breast cancer recurrence at 10 years, reduces deaths

The UK meta-analysis analysed the results from 17 randomised trials of radiotherapy versus no radiotherapy following breast-conserving surgery, studying over 10,000 women. In most of the trials, radiotherapy was to the conserved breast only.
 
The researchers found the reduction in cancer recurrence was clearly evident in the first year after radiotherapy and lasted throughout the decade.
 
Within 10 years of being diagnosed, 35% of the women who did not have radiotherapy had a recurrence, either locoregional or distant, compared with 19% of women who did.
 
Within 15 years of diagnosis, 25% of women who did not have radiotherapy had died from breast cancer compared with 21% of those who did.
