Young people with cancer often do not recall receiving information at diagnosis about the effects treatment can have on their fertility, but the creation of specialised teams may be effective in addressing this sensitive issue, Australian and US researchers say.
“Surveys from the United States and the United Kingdom consistently suggest that 30% to 60% of [cancer] survivors do not recall receiving information [at diagnosis] from their health care team about the risk of cancer treatment to fertility,” they noted.
The present review of fertility preservation in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer was conducted by oncology and reproductive experts from Columbia University Medical Centre New York and the Royal Women’s Hospital Melbourne.
