Most patients prefer high dose cisplastin (HDC) administration as outpatients rather than inpatients, a study from Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital shows.
In the study of more than 50 patients who received HDC chemotherapy from various Sydney Cancer Centre oncology clinics, nearly 60% preferred outpatient (OP) rather than inpatient (IP) treatment (p=0.002).
Nearly one-third of patients rated OP treatment ‘much better’ and approximately 30% said OP treatment was ‘moderately better’.
There were no significant differences in patient ratings of anxiety/depression, nausea, vomiting, fatigue or overall quality of life between the two treatments.
In addition, OP treatment required fewer nursing hours (p<0.001) and shorter hospital time than IP treatment.
